Nin – The Magical City of Kings, Sandy Beaches and Salt

Did you know that an asteroid has been named Aenona — after the ancient name of Nin? This small but mighty town on the Croatian coast carries a legacy that reaches far beyond its size, stretching from the stars above to the salt pans below.

Ancient Origins

The city was founded in the 9th century BC by the Illyrian Liburnes, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Croatia. Its strategic position on a small island connected to the mainland by bridges made it a natural center of power and culture.

The Royal City

The Church of St. Nicholas, dating from the 11th–12th century, served as the coronation site for seven Croatian kings. This small but magnificent church, standing alone in a field just outside the old town, is one of Croatia's most iconic historical monuments.

Old Town Island

Nin's Old Town sits on a small island, connected to the mainland by 16th-century stone bridges. Walking across these ancient bridges and through the narrow streets feels like stepping back in time to medieval Croatia.

Sacred Heritage

  • Parish Church of Saint Anselm — home to a precious ring gifted by Pope Pius II, this church houses some of Croatia's most important religious artifacts
  • St. Peter's Church (9th century) — a remarkable early Croatian church that functions as an astronomical calendar, with light entering through carefully positioned openings to mark the equinoxes and solstices

Roman Grandeur

The ancient Roman temple in Nin measured an impressive 33 meters by 23.5 meters, with a towering 17-meter Corinthian column — evidence of Nin's importance as the Roman city of Aenona. These ruins speak to a time when the city was a major center of Roman administration and culture in Dalmatia.

Maritime Heritage

The Museum of Ninian Antiquities houses the famous Condura Croatica ships — medieval Croatian vessels discovered in the area. These ships are among the most important archaeological finds related to early Croatian seafaring and trade.

The Gold of Nin — Salt

Nin's salt production is legendary. The salt pans produce mineral-rich, hand-harvested salt using traditional methods passed down through generations. The most prized product is the "salt flower" (fleur de sel) — a premium, delicate salt that forms on the surface of the pans and is carefully collected by hand. Nin salt is celebrated by chefs and food lovers worldwide for its exceptional quality and mineral content.
