Dugi Otok — The Pearl of the Adriatic Sea

Stretching 45 kilometers in length with widths ranging from just 1 to 4 kilometers, Dugi Otok ("Long Island") is a slender jewel in the Zadar archipelago. Its highest peak, Vela Straža, reaches 338 meters, and approximately 1,500 residents call its 12 charming towns home. The island is easily accessible by ferry from Zadar's Gaženica port to Brbinj.

Activities and Adventures

Dugi Otok is a paradise for active travelers. The island offers outstanding opportunities for sailing, cycling, trekking, climbing, diving, snorkeling, and kayaking — all set against the backdrop of pristine Adriatic waters and unspoiled nature.

Telašćica Nature Park

Covering 70.5 km² and encompassing 13 islands, Telašćica Nature Park is one of Dugi Otok's crown jewels. Home to over 400 plant species, the park features the awe-inspiring rock wall Grapšćak, which rises 161 meters above the sea — a sheer cliff face that leaves visitors speechless.

Sali — A Historic Fishing Town

The charming town of Sali has been a center of fishing culture for centuries. Its narrow streets, traditional stone architecture, and authentic Dalmatian atmosphere make it a must-visit destination on the island.

Brbišćica Bay — "Dugi Otok Jurassic Park"

This remote bay has earned its nickname thanks to its wild, prehistoric-feeling landscape. Rocky formations and untouched nature create an atmosphere that feels like stepping back millions of years in time.

Natural Wonders

  • Zmajevo Oko (Dragon's Eye) — a mysterious saltwater lake connected to the sea through underground channels
  • Golubinka Cave — a dramatic sea cave perfect for adventurous explorers
  • Veli Žal Beach — a stunning pebble beach nestled in Telašćica Nature Park

Veli Rat Lighthouse

Standing at 42 meters, the Veli Rat Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the Adriatic. Built in 1849, its distinctive yellow facade has guided sailors for over 170 years and offers spectacular panoramic views from its surroundings.

Underwater Treasures

The Michelle Shipwreck, which sank in 1983, has become one of the most popular diving sites in the area. The wreck rests in crystal-clear waters and is home to a thriving marine ecosystem.

Sakarun Beach

Often called one of the most beautiful beaches in Croatia, Sakarun stretches 800 meters of fine gravel and sand. Its shallow turquoise waters and pine-fringed shoreline make it a postcard-perfect destination.

Hidden History: Submarine Bunkers

Near the village of Božava, visitors can explore fascinating Cold War-era submarine bunkers — a unique piece of military history carved into the island's coastline.
