Kornati National Park

The Kornati Islands archipelago is one of Croatia's most extraordinary natural treasures. Established as a National Park in 1980, it covers an impressive 220 km² and encompasses 89 of the 150 islands that make up this stunning chain in the Adriatic Sea.

The Most "Ragged" Archipelago in the Mediterranean

Kornati is widely regarded as the most "ragged" archipelago in the entire Mediterranean Sea. Its exceptional natural beauty is defined by crystal clear sea waters, fascinating geomorphology, and landscapes that have remained largely untouched by human development.

The highest peak in the archipelago is Metlina hill, standing at 237 meters on Kornat Island — the largest island in the group. One of the most striking geological features is the crown phenomenon: steep, dramatic cliffs that plunge into the sea on the outer side of the islands, creating a breathtaking wall of rock facing the open Adriatic.

A Rich Tapestry of History

The Kornati Islands carry a deep historical significance spanning millennia — from prehistoric settlements through Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian periods. Among the most notable historical landmarks is the Byzantine fortress Tureta, dating from the 6th century, which stands as a testament to the strategic importance these islands held throughout the ages.

Biodiversity and Marine Life

The natural wealth of Kornati is staggering:

  • 700–800 plant species thrive across the islands
  • Over 350 marine plant species inhabit the surrounding waters
  • Between 2,500 and 3,000 marine life species call these waters home

Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply someone seeking the raw beauty of the Adriatic, Kornati National Park offers an unforgettable experience in one of Europe's most pristine island environments.
