A Hidden Gem on the Adriatic Coast

Nestled between Zadar and Šibenik, adjacent to the well-known resort town of Biograd na Moru, the small town of Sveti Filip i Jakov (St. Filip and Jakov) is named after two of the twelve apostles. Its economy has long been rooted in agriculture, viticulture, and tourism — and each spring it celebrates all three with a vibrant flower festival.

History of the Festival

The story began in 1998, when the town won an award for the best-ordered urban space in Croatia. Inspired by this recognition, the community decided to build on its green identity, and the Flower Festival was officially established in 2001.

Since then, it has grown into one of the most beloved springtime events on the Dalmatian coast, drawing visitors from across Croatia and beyond.

What to Expect

The festival is a three-day event held on the last weekend of April each year. The programme is packed with activities for all ages:

  • Eco-workshops — learn about sustainable gardening and plant care
  • Expert lectures — horticulturists and botanists share their knowledge
  • Flower competitions — local growers compete for the best blooms
  • Art and craft exhibitions — showcasing regional talent
  • Fashion shows — with floral-inspired designs
  • Theater performances — open-air entertainment for families

Dalmatian Culture on Full Display

No Dalmatian event would be complete without music, and the Flower Festival is no exception. Traditional Dalmatian a cappella singers (klapa groups) perform throughout the weekend, their harmonies drifting through the flower-lined streets and adding an unmistakably Croatian atmosphere to the celebration.

Whether you're a gardening enthusiast, a culture lover, or simply looking for a charming day out away from the crowded tourist spots, the Flower Festival in St. Filip and Jakov is well worth the short drive from Zadar.
