Zadar Sightseeing History

A One-of-a-Kind Museum

The Museum of Ancient Glass in Zadar is the only institution of its kind in the world — entirely dedicated to antique glass. Housing approximately 2,000 unique exhibits, it offers a fascinating journey through centuries of Roman glassmaking artistry, from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD.

The Collection

The artifacts on display were discovered at archaeological sites across the Zadar region, including Zadar itself, Nin, Starigrad pod Velebitem, and Asseria near Benkovac. The collection includes everyday dishes, elegant jugs, and even whimsical fish-shaped vessels that reveal how Romans combined functionality with artistry in their daily lives.

Beyond the finished objects, the museum also presents the glass-making techniques and tools used in antiquity, giving visitors a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship involved in producing these delicate works.

An additional 2,000 objects are kept in storage, used for research and rotating exhibitions.

The Facility

The museum occupies an impressive 2,575 m² facility that goes well beyond a traditional exhibition space. It includes:

  • A specialized library for researchers and glass enthusiasts
  • A glass blowing workshop where visitors can watch artisans demonstrate ancient techniques
  • A conference room for lectures and academic events
  • A souvenir shop offering unique glass replicas and gifts

The glass blowing workshop is a particular highlight — watching a skilled craftsperson shape molten glass into a Roman-style vessel is an unforgettable experience that brings the ancient world to life.

Visiting Tips

The museum is located in the Cosmacendi Palace in Zadar's Old Town, making it easy to combine with a walk along the Riva promenade or a visit to the nearby Roman Forum. Allow at least an hour to fully appreciate the collection.
